This day ride starts in Cetinje, the old royal capital of Montenegro and gateway to Lovcen National Park. From the edge of town you quickly leave the traffic behind and follow quiet asphalt roads into a landscape of beech forests, rocky slopes and scattered stone hamlets that once formed the core of Stara Crna Gora, Old Montenegro.
The first part of the route climbs steadily, weaving through dense beech woods and karst fields. Riders who prefer to save some energy can shorten the climb with an optional transfer to the village of Njeguši for an extra fee of € 20,00. From here the ascent is gentler and you soon reach the high plateau of Lovcen, where forest opens into pastures and wide horizons.
On the western side of the loop the scenery becomes truly dramatic. The road and gravel tracks run along balconies high above the coast, with panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor, the Adriatic shoreline and the broken limestone ridges that drop towards the sea. This is Lovcen at its best, a mixture of open rock, pockets of beech forest and centuries of history in every terrace and stone wall. The descent back towards Cetinje follows a mix of smooth asphalt and easy gravel. A section of the downhill can be done entirely on gravel for those who enjoy a more off road feeling. If you prefer a more relaxed ride you can stay on the paved road instead and glide back to town on a long, flowing descent.
Along the way there are plenty of places to stop for coffee or a simple lunch, and to explore the story of Old Montenegro, from the traditional houses of Njeguši to viewpoints that look out over the historic fortifications of Kotor and the coastal plain. By the time you roll back into Cetinje, you will have linked forest, high plateau and sea views in one unforgettable day on the bike.
