The Durmitor Ring is Montenegro’s most legendary mountain circuit — a breathtaking loop around the wild limestone peaks, glacial lakes and high pastures of the Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage area. Over two days you’ll cross forgotten valleys, ancient shepherds’ villages and mountain passes that touch the sky.
The route combines smooth alpine roads and remote gravel tracks, linking both sides of the massif and offering constant views of the Tara and Piva canyons below. Expect solitude, space and a pure sense of mountain freedom — this is Montenegro at its highest and most dramatic.

The first day begins in the mountain town of Žabljak, gateway to Durmitor. You’ll soon leave the bustle behind, climbing through fragrant pine forests toward Mala Crna Gora, the highest permanently inhabited village in Montenegro. Life here follows the rhythm of the mountains — slow, resilient, and deeply authentic. This is a place that invites a pause: take a moment to breathe in the stillness, chat with the locals, or sample a slice of homemade cheese at one of the farms along the way.
From there, a winding descent leads to the emerald Sušičko Lake, hidden deep within a glacial valley framed by sheer cliffs. After a well-earned rest, the route continues with an optional detour across the gravel tracks of Crkvičko Polje — a vast, high-altitude karst plateau where the landscape opens wide to reveal sweeping views of the Durmitor and Piva ranges. In case you feel tired you can of course skip this extra loop and you will reduce this stage by 30%.
The day ends in Trsa, a tiny mountain hamlet surrounded by meadows and silence — the perfect place to rest your weary legs. You’ll be hosted in a small, charming inn, where a hot shower, a hearty dinner, and perhaps a well-deserved drink or two await before a peaceful mountain night.
After breakfast, the road climbs toward the legendary Sedlo Pass, one of the highest paved roads in the Balkans. The panorama unfolds with every turn — sharp limestone ridges, green valleys and the long shadows of Durmitor’s 48 peaks. Not far from the pass lies a serene mountain lake beside an ancient stećci necropolis, where medieval stone tombs stand silently against the sky. It’s a powerful reminder of how long these mountains have witnessed life passing through.
From here, it’s a smooth country road back toward Žabljak. Stop often to take in the views — every bend offers another postcard. Note that also this can be shortened by 30% by skipping the last bit. The ride ends where it began, but with a whole new sense of scale: you’ve circled the roof of Montenegro, a life-changing experience!
