This one-day adventure begins with a transfer from the coastal town of Herceg Novi to a high-altitude starting point far above the Bay of Kotor. The mountains along the Adriatic rise to nearly 2,000 metres, and climbing all that would be heroic – but today is about pure enjoyment. The real magic lies in the panoramic carriage roads and the unforgettable descent that follows.
Built by the Habsburg engineers in the early nineteenth century, this historic route once connected a network of hilltop forts guarding their strategic jewel on the Adriatic. The gravel road winds through pine forest and open ridges to the Sedlo Pass, the highest point of the ride. From here, those with energy to spare can hike to the summit of Žubački Kabao, the highest peak on the Adriatic coast, offering sweeping views over all of Montenegro, southern Croatia and northern Albania – a two-hour round walk that is truly worth it.
Then comes the highlight: a breathtaking 1,700-metre descent all the way down to sea level. The switchbacks seem endless, the views expand with every turn, and occasional stops to cool your brakes are the perfect excuse to take it all in. And when the descent finally ends, you roll straight onto the seaside promenade of Herceg Novi — the perfect place to celebrate the ride. Swop your cycling gear for your bathing suit, cool down in the Adriatic, and toast the day with a scoop of ice cream or a cold beer at a beachfront café.
